The 2nd workshop of the Business and Human Rights Series on:
"Company Human Rights Policies"
took place in our Geneva office on June 15, 2017.
For the second session of our series, we focused on Company Human Rights Policies. Respecting human rights is indeed not a passive responsibility: it requires action on the part of businesses, and in particular certain policies and processes in place. As provided by the UN Guiding Principle 16, the basis for embedding their responsibility to respect human rights, business enterprises should express their commitment to meet this responsibility through a statement of policy that:
- is approved at the most senior level of the business enterprise;
- is informed by relevant internal and/or external expertise;
- stipulates the enterprise’s human rights expectations of personnel, business partners and other parties directly linked to its operations, products or services;
- is publicly available and communicated internally and externally to all personnel, business partners and other relevant parties;
- is reflected in operational policies and procedures necessary to embed it throughout the business enterprise
We were pleased to welcome for this workshop Dominique Habegger, Vice-president at De Pury Pictet Turrettini & Cie S.A., and Roman Pinösch, Attorney at the Paris Bar, who gave a presentation on Company Human Rights Policies and how businesses meet their responsibility to respect human rights through governance rules.
Dominique Habegger is responsible since 2013 for the Cadmos Engagement Funds at de Pury Pictet Turrettini & Cie. Throughout his career, he has always strived to demonstrate that it is possible to reconcile responsibility with profitability. In 1998, Lombard Odier hires him to set up a methodology to manage “extra-financial” risks. With the help of a dedicated team of specialists, this strategy was adopted by prominent institutional investors. Drawing on his experience, Dominique Habegger wrote in 2003 the white paper for ASSET4 (later sold to Thomson Reuters) before successfully setting up the company. After that and before joining PPT, he contributed to expand and develop Ethos’ business activities between 2008 and 2013 where he had the chance to better understand the constraints of pension funds.
After working for several years in the litigation, arbitration & white collar crime practice of one of Paris top independent law firms, Roman Pinösch now focuses on multi-jurisdictional disputes, environmental law and arbitration, notably in the energy sector. He also advises corporate clients in the fields of compliance, risk management as well as in market access strategy for investment projects in different parts of the world. He was admitted to the Paris Bar in 2011 and as a foreign lawyer in Geneva in 2016.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP SERIES ON HUMAN AND BUSINESS RIGHTS
FRORIEP, in collaboration with the Act On Your Future Foundation, organises series of workshops on business and human rights. The workshops provide insights on the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and serve as a way to identify, exchange and promote best practices and lessons learned on the implementation of the UNGPs.
